This document defines Sean Endler’s approach to First Principles
thinking.
Rather than accepting assumptions, inherited processes or
industry conventions, this philosophy focuses on understanding
the fundamental truths of a problem before designing solutions.
It serves as the canonical reference for how complex problems
are analyzed throughout the SE-EOS Knowledge Library.

FIRST PRINCIPLES

Every organization accumulates assumptions.
Processes become habits.
Habits become policies.
Policies become “the way we’ve always done it.”
Over time those assumptions become invisible.
One of the most valuable things a leader can do is make those
assumptions visible again.
Before asking how to improve something, I first ask whether we
are solving the right problem.
Progress rarely comes from optimizing bad assumptions.
It comes from questioning them.

START WITH THE PROBLEM

I rarely begin by discussing solutions.
I begin by trying to understand the problem.
What is actually happening?
Who is affected?
Why does this matter?
What evidence do we have?
What assumptions are we making?
Only after understanding the problem does it make sense to
discuss solutions.

QUESTION ASSUMPTIONS
===============================================================================
Many constraints are real.
Many are inherited.
The challenge is knowing the difference.
Questions I frequently ask include:
Why is this done this way?
When was that decision made?
What has changed since then?
Would we make the same decision today?
What would happen if we started over?
Organizations often discover that their biggest limitations are
historical, not technical.

SIMPLIFY BEFORE SCALING
===============================================================================
Complex systems magnify complexity.
If a process is confusing today, scaling it only spreads the
confusion faster.
My approach is to simplify first.
Clarify the objective.
Remove unnecessary steps.
Reduce dependencies.
Only then should the organization invest in scaling.

SEPARATE FACTS FROM OPINIONS
===============================================================================
Strong decisions begin with evidence.
I try to separate:
Facts.
Observations.
Interpretations.
Opinions.
Predictions.
When those become mixed together, organizations often solve the
wrong problem.
Clear thinking begins with distinguishing what we know from what
we believe.

UNDERSTAND THE SYSTEM
===============================================================================
Problems rarely exist in isolation.
Every customer experience, product decision or operational issue
is part of a larger system.
Changing one component often creates unexpected consequences
elsewhere.
Before changing a system, understand how it behaves.

LOOK FOR ROOT CAUSES
===============================================================================
Symptoms are visible.
Causes are often hidden.
Customers complain about slow software.
The root cause may be organizational priorities.
A launch slips.
The root cause may be unclear ownership.
A product struggles.
The root cause may be misunderstanding the customer.
Addressing symptoms creates temporary improvement.
Addressing root causes creates lasting improvement.

DESIGN FROM FUNDAMENTALS

When beginning something new, I often ask:
If we had no existing product…
No existing process…
No existing organization…
How would we design this today?
This question removes unnecessary historical constraints and
creates space for genuinely better solutions.

EMBRACE EVIDENCE
===============================================================================
Strong opinions are valuable.
Evidence is more valuable.
One of the strengths I continually try to cultivate is the
willingness to change my mind when new evidence appears.
Being wrong is not failure.
Refusing to learn is.

MAKE THE COMPLEX UNDERSTANDABLE
===============================================================================
One recurring theme throughout my career has been translating
complexity into clarity.
Whether working with engineers, executives, designers,
researchers or customers, I believe the best ideas can usually
be explained in simple language.
If an idea cannot be clearly explained, it often has not yet
been clearly understood.

Across every organization I have worked with, the process has
remained remarkably consistent.
Understand the customer.
Understand the business.
Understand the technology.
Question assumptions.
Simplify the system.
Align the organization.
Deliver measurable outcomes.
The industry changes.
The process does not.

First Principles thinking is the discipline of reducing complex
problems to their most fundamental truths before building
solutions.
It creates better decisions because it replaces assumptions with
understanding, complexity with clarity and incremental thinking
with meaningful innovation.
Rather than asking how things have always been done, it asks how
they should be done.
